Virtual servers and virtual delivery systems

By kbailey on March 23, 2011

I don' t know if there are any technology coordinators on this forum or not, but I thought I would post to see if I get any replies.

This is our first year using NWEA's MAP test.   We are in the process of rolling  out a virtual server for the next school year, but from what I understand the MAP will not work well in a virtual environment because it is based on older technology.

Is anyone using MAP in a virutal server environment?  Also, we are upgrading our K-2 builings to Windows 7.   Has anyone had issue with MAP working with Windows 7 machines?

I have not seen any reports of issues with any of these in the forums.  So I thought I would throw this out to the group.  Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

kbailey, how did your roll out of VDI go? How did it effect your NWEA testing? We currently have SOME VDI and want to move in the direction of 100% district wide. I would love to hear all the pros and cons of your experience. Thanks!

I have deployed MAP on Windows Terminal Services on 2003, 2008 and Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, VMWare View VDI, and even NComputing clients. We have had some issues with the audio being associated with the wrong test and even the test coming up as a different student. I don't have a good recommendation. We've tried both virtual IP addresses and not. Neither appears to make a difference. At least NComputing confirmed the issue and said that their newer releases of their software would fix the issues. But, for the vast majority we've not had issues. Until this morning when I saw the tests being switched between active users using VMWare View PCoIP, I had completely forgotten about the issues. We are running the test taker directly from the network with no local install. Perhaps installing TestTaker9 on the base image for the VMWare VDI pool would fix the issue but I haven't tested. We've had no issues with running directly from a shared network location. A logon script copies the shortcut to the current user's desktop from our NETLOGON folder on the domain controller. We're running almost 100% Windows 7 either virtually or on laptops and netbooks. I would be happy to help or answer questions you might have. Feel free to contact me.
