Looking at Growth in Scores

By rileyl on January 10, 2012

How would you acount for growth if students scored higher than the norm in the Fall test session, then scored lower in the Winter session, yet still above the norm? Could it be guessing or standard deviation, or testing conditions? How can we help students look at their growth if it looks as though the went backward?

We just had a partner write a great blog on understanding negative growth - I recommend it! http://community.nwea.org/node/533

I would compare their growth to the previous year's results. If it appears they are higher, even though the student went down, they are still able to identify growth. If the scores went down, it is worth discussing with the student. If the students dropped considerably, I'd say they were guessing. Time taken is a good indicator of that.
