Introduction
There may be instances where you are trying to find specific files on your computer that are hidden. The following will show you how to view hidden files on your computer.

Steps
You should consult with your technical support team before making this change. It is done at your own risk.

Windows:


Mac OS X

Mac OS X 10.9 and above

  1. Open Finder.
  2. In the menu bar at the top, select Go > Utilities > Terminal.
  3. Enter the command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE;killall Finder
  4. Press Enter on the keyboard.
  5. From the Apple menu, select Force Quit…
  6. Select Finder, and click Relaunch.

Mac OS X 10.8 and below

  1. Open Finder.
  2. In the menu bar at the top, select Go > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
  3. Enter the command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
  4. Press Enter on the keyboard.
  5. From the Apple menu, select Force Quit…
  6. Select Finder, and click Relaunch.

To hide the files again after completing your task, follow the steps below:

  1. Select Go > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  2. Enter the command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
  3. Press Enter.
  4. From the Apple menu, select Force Quit…
  5. Select Finder, and click Relaunch.

You can also relaunch Finder by going to the dock icon for Finder, right-clicking (or clicking and holding) and selecting Relaunch from the menu.
