How do you decide on possible strategies for formative assessment? Is there a strategy matrix or list that you use?
When I coach principals to work with teachers to improve instructional capacity, I work to focus on effective planning to ensure that formative assessment is a part of every lesson and used at multiple times so that teachers know how to adjust and modify the lesson to meet the needs of each learner. In working with teacher teams, checklists are often provided to ensure teachers have high impact strategies to implement when using formative assessment. It is also important that students know and understand how to use formative assessment so they know if they are on track to achieve the objective or target. I try to help teachers to reflect on how using formative assessment helps them instructionally but ultimately increases student achievement.
