Consider these two definitions:
“Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.” (2006)
“Formative assessment is a planned, ongoing process used by all students and teachers during learning and teaching to elicit and use evidence of student learning to improve student understanding of intended disciplinary learning outcomes and support students to become self-directed learners.” (2017)
Both definitions come from the Formative Assessment for Students and Teachers (FAST) State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS) established by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Ten years after creating the original definition, members of FAST SCASS revised it based on current formative assessment research, theory, and practice.
