How to use embedded universal features (test item aids)

Introduction
This article describes each of the embedded universal accessibility features for MAP Growth tests (except MAP Growth K-2 tests) and MAP Summative tests. All of these features (except the highlighter and eraser) will work on the supported testing platforms and operating systems, including iPads and Chromebooks. The highlighter and eraser do not work on iPads at this time.

Zoom

Zoom

Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Ctrl +/- will zoom in or out.
  • Alt or Option +/- will zoom in or out.
Purpose
  • Zoom will allow students to increase the size of text and pictures onscreen. 
  • Students with impaired vision will find this helpful, but also younger students who just need slightly larger text will benefit. 
Function
  • The zoom tool will be available throughout the test and functions similarly to a browser zoom.
  • Zoom level is set to 100% by default and cannot be set any smaller.
  • Students can zoom in at 25% increments (e.g. 125%,150%).
  • The maximum zoom level is 500%. 
  • Once a student has selected their zoom level, it will remain at that level until they complete the test or choose a different zoom setting. It does not reset after each item.
  • Vertical and horizontal scrollbars appear as needed depending on the zoom level. Students can click on the scrollbar using a mouse or use their keyboard arrow keys.
  • Using the Reset button will not reset the zoom level.


Highlighter/Eraser

Keyboard shortcuts
  • Alt or Option H toggles the highlighter on or off.
  • Alt or Option E toggles the highlighter eraser on or off.
Purpose
  • The highlighter and eraser are useful for marking key parts of a question.
Function


Line Reader

Line Reader

Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Alt or Option L toggles the Line Reader on or off.
Purpose
  • The Line Reader is useful for students who need assistance focusing on one line of text at a time. This could be for visual or cognitive reasons.
Function
  • Can be clicked and dragged with the mouse or moved with the up and down arrows when in focus. There are small orange lines on the left and right to show when it is in focus.
  • Items that are covered by the line reader cannot by selected. The line reader must be moved first.
  • Clicking the line reader icon again will toggle the feature off.


Notepad

Keyboard shortcuts
  • Alt or Option N toggles the notepad on or off.
Purpose
  • The notepad is useful for making notes about the question.
Function
  • Clicking the notepad icon displays a notepad on the item screen for typing notes. 
  • Clicking the Hide button or the notepad icon again will make the notepad disappear.
  • Even if the notepad is hidden or toggled off, any text will remain until the student moves to the next question. 


Answer Eliminator

Answer Eliminator

Keyboard Navigation
  • Alt or Option A will toggle the Answer Eliminator on or off.
Purpose
  • The Answer Eliminator allows students to visually eliminate the answer options that they think are wrong. 
  • This allows students to consider their answer choice by eliminating the ones they know are wrong. Students must still select their answer choice to complete the question.
Function
  • The answer eliminator will only appear in the toolbar for applicable item types.
  • The student must invoke the answer eliminator on each item they wish to use it on. It will not stay on after the student moves to the next question.
  • Clicking on the answer eliminator icon in the toolbar will make X icons appear next to each answer choice.
  • Students can eliminate an answer by clicking on the X icon next to the answer choice.
  • When an answer is eliminated, it will appear dimmer.
  • Students can restore an eliminated answer choice by clicking on the X icon next to that answer choice.
  • An eliminated answer choice can still be selected as the desired answer.
  • The answers will remain in their eliminated state even if the answer eliminator tool is toggled off.
  • Clicking the answer eliminator icon again will toggle the feature off.
  • Using the Reset button will return all the answer choices to their original state (none will be eliminated).


Calculator

Keyboard shortcuts
  • Use Alt or Option C to open the calculator (if available for that question) or to navigate back to the calculator if it is already open.
Purpose
  • Appears for applicable questions.
Function
  • Clicking the calculator icon will load either a 4-function calculator or a scientific calculator, depending on the grade and content in the question. 
  • It can be dragged and moved around the screen as needed. 
  • Clicking the icon again will make the calculator disappear.


Ruler

Keyboard shortcuts and navigation
  • Alt or Option R toggles the ruler on or off.
  • To move, use arrow keys.
  • To rotate, use L (left) and R (right).
Purpose
  • Appears for applicable questions.
Function
  • Clicking the ruler icon will cause a ruler to be displayed on the item screen. 
  • It can be dragged and moved around the screen and rotated as needed. 
  • Clicking the icon again will make the ruler disappear.


Protractor

Keyboard shortcuts and navigation
  • Alt or Option R toggles the ruler on or off.
  • To move, use arrow keys.
  • To rotate, use L (left) and R (right).
Purpose
  • Appears for applicable questions.
Function
  • Clicking the ruler icon will cause a ruler to be displayed on the item screen. 
  • It can be dragged and moved around the screen and rotated as needed. 
  • Clicking the icon again will make the ruler disappear.
